The Curtis Smout Scholarship
The Curtis Smout Scholarship
At a retirement dinner for Curtis Smout in 1999 an idea arose to have a Curtis Smout Scholarship in our region. “I recognized the generosity of Curtis during the annual Region 13 fundraising auctions where he is always buying items that he doesn’t really need, but wants to contribute to the association and the students in our region. I felt Smout’s enthusiasm for giving and his dedication as a mentor for students and new professionals in the union field made him a natural fit as the sponsor of this scholarship,” said Bruce Zimmerman.
Curtis Smout has served Region 13 for many years and has served a variety of roles – from holding volunteer positions, conducting workshops, hosting events in Salt Lake City, hosting the 1999 regional conference. In addition he has served many roles at the International level of ACUI not to mention being a nurturing presence to us all.
The Region 13 Steering Committee, at the summer meeting in June, 1999, voted to officially change the name of the scholarship fund from the “I-Lead Scholarship Fund” to the Curtis Smout Scholarship Fund. The scholarship fund will be used to send students to ILEAD, STEP, the Region 13 Fall Conference and for the winners of the regional case study during the fall conference who receive a one year individual membership to ACUI.
Recipients of this scholarship will be announced every year at the fall conference and presented with a certificate to acknowledge their hard work and dedication to developing themselves and helping lead the way for others.
Thank you Curtis for your many years of love, support and dedication and we hope to see you year after year to help us present these awards to our very deserving Region 13 students and new professionals.
